Turning 60: A Celebration, Not a Crisis

By Linda Mather (Lead Nurse & Director)

3 minute read

First things first—a huge thank you to all the lovely people who assumed my upcoming “special” birthday was my 50th! Honestly, I’ll take those extra 10 years as a compliment. But the truth is, I’m about to turn 60, and I couldn’t be more grateful for it.

Why Fear 60? It’s a Privilege

Over the years, I’ve watched people approach 60 with dread, as if it’s some kind of expiration date. But why? I’ve had 60 incredible years on this beautiful planet, and I see that as something to celebrate, not mourn. Yes, aging comes with challenges—both physical and emotional—but it also brings wisdom, strength, and a deeper appreciation for life.

The Secret to Staying Young

Here’s what I’ve learned: If you think young, you feel young. And if you feel young, you act young. The opposite is also true—start thinking old, and you’ll start feeling it, too.

Last year, I found myself in a tough place. I had been struggling with my health for years, but by the middle of last year, it had taken its toll. I felt exhausted, worn down, and, for the first time, I started acting old—walking slower, moving cautiously, and feeling like life was passing me by.

Then, I made a decision. I wasn’t ready for this. I wasn’t ready to give in to age. So, I made changes—physically, mentally, and emotionally. And do you know what? I started feeling young again.

60 things before 60? No Thanks!

A friend once told me she was working on a list of 50 things to do before 50. When I heard that, I panicked—how on earth was I going to find 60 things to do before 60?! But then I realised something: I don’t need a list. I’ve already lived my life to the fullest. I’ve had adventures, taken risks, and done the things that truly matter to me. I’m stepping into 60 with no regrets—and that, to me, is the biggest achievement of all.

Resilience & Joy: The Ultimate Survival Tools
Anyone who knows me will tell you—my life hasn’t been easy. I’ve faced challenges that many couldn’t even imagine. But I’ve learned two things that have carried me through: resilience and joy.

  • Resilience gets you through the storms.
  • Joy reminds you why it’s worth it.

If you can hold onto those two things, you can face anything.

Live Like It’s Your Last Day
If there’s one piece of advice I could give to anyone—whether you’re 20, 40, or 80—it’s this: live fully.

Build your physical and mental strength while you’re young—it will serve you well later.

Find joy in the small things.

Don’t wait for the “perfect” time to do what makes you happy.

And most importantly, live every day as if it’s your last. Because one day, you’ll be right.

Here’s to the next chapter! 🎉

As always, if we haven’t met yet, I hope to connect with you in the future, and if we already know each other, I look forward to seeing you again soon.
